- Position: Assistant Professor located at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center at Beaumont. Appointment: 100% research. Salary will be highly competitive and commensurate with experience. Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will be expected to work closely with a team of scientists whose major focus includes rice plant breeding, the study of rice’s response to abiotic and biotic stresses, and the physiology of rice growth, development, and yield. A significant aspect of this person’s research is expected to focus on arthropod pest development, impact, and management, as affected by edaphic, climatic, and biotic variables. The incumbent is expected to work closely with the Center’s rice breeders to determine the genetic basis for inheritance of resistance to major insect pests of rice. The incumbent’s research is also expected to result in the development of arthropod management recommendations for commercial cultivars. The incumbent will be expected to conduct field research that impacts the Texas rice industry, partner with rice entomology experts in other rice-producing states and communicate effectively with the state’s rice producers. The incumbent will be expected to develop a nationally competitive externally funded research program and, as well as collaborate closely with scientists across the Texas A&M University System, the USDA/ARS, and other states, and globally. Opportunities will be available for nationally competitive funding for research on associated cropping systems. Supervision and Evaluation: The individual in this position will be administratively responsible to the Center Director of the Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center at Beaumont. Promotion decisions are the joint responsibility of the Center Director, the Head of the incumbent’s TAMU department, and the Director of Texas A&M AgriLife Research, and will conform to the policies and procedures of the agency, the Department, and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for the Texas A&M University System Facilities: The Texas A&M AgriLife Research Center at Beaumont houses about 40 scientists and research support staff. Facilities include ca. 940 acres of land near Beaumont, and ca. 113 acres. near Eagle Lake, Texas. Both locations are largely used for rice crop research. The Beaumont Center also has a dormitory for hosting students and visitors. The incumbent will be provided with office, laboratory, greenhouse space, field research sites, partial support for a research technician, and start-up funds. - Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in Entomology or a closely related biological science is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have a strong research background in the genetic inheritance of host plant resistance traits, expertise with quantitative analysis of entomological and host plant interactions data, and a working knowledge of all aspects of field experiments needed to address the efficacy of host plant resistance traits and chemical controls. A proven track record of research productivity demonstrated through nationally recognized publications and external competitive research funding, and a demonstrated ability to clearly communicate research results to growers and consultants, are essential. Candidates who are crossed-trained in complementary areas of crop production and management are desired.
