- NATURE OF WORK The Department of Agri-Environmental Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez Campus is searching for candidates for the position of Assistant Specialist in Entomology through a special appointment. The appointment will be for 12 months, full time, with responsibilities that include 75% extension and 25% research. The selected candidate will be responsible for extending science-based information to agricultural agents, farmers, and the general public. The candidate will also establish and carry out a multidisciplinary outreach program on pest management. It is expected that this person successfully procures external funds to support the outreach program, sponsors graduate students and publishes peer-reviewed material. The position involves the collaboration and interaction with other specialists, agricultural agents, researchers, professors, farmers, professionals in other related agencies, community groups and organizations. The selected person must have problem-solving skills and be capable of responding to consultations from farmers. It is expected that the selected candidate participates in the extension of educational material to the clientele using both traditional and electronic methods. The employee will perform the following tasks: 1. Identify crop pests with the purpose of developing IPM strategies for their effective control. 2. Develop training programs for agricultural agents, collaborators and the general public on early detection, rapid response, and actions to eradicate invasive species before these spread and cause harm. 3. Perform meetings with producers, pesticide trainings, and field days to promote and strengthen the use of good agricultural practices and crop integrated management. 4. Provide scientific information through periodic publications, fact sheets, and visits to producers. 5. Perform applied research related to the management of insect pests in different crops. 6. Publish the research outcomes in scientific journals and be available to present the results in meetings of professional associations. 7. Design and implement a work plan that addresses high-priority topics in the areas of agriculture, urban agriculture, insect identification, and integrated pest management. 8. Develop, lead, and evaluate educational programs, including workshops, short courses, curriculums, newsletters, and press releases, independently or as part of a team. 9. Address any additional requested assignments.
- Qualifications
- PhD in Entomology or related area completed by the time of this job announcement. Experience in pest identification, integrated pest management (IPM), chemical control and risk analysis. The candidate should exhibit excellent verbal and written communication skills both in English and Spanish, and the ability to work in extension and applied research in Entomology. Applicants must present evidence of high-quality scientific publications, as well as the ability of successfully obtaining competitive research funds.
