Description
Summary This position is located at United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agriculture Research Service (ARS), Invasive Species and Pollinator Health Research Unit, Davis, CA. The incumbent actively participates in one or more phases of the research process by performing a variety of complex technical duties, in a laboratory and field environment, related to pollinator biology, physiology, or behavior. Responsibilities - Collects, prepares, evaluates and verifies samples from cage assays of live honey bees or similar organisms. - Executes protocols requiring a clean environment without introducing contaminated material. - Follows detailed protocols to perform a range of techniques, and analyzes collected samples using a variety of specialized laboratory equipment. - Adapts, modifies or develops new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of a pollinator biology research project.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: For the GS-7: Qualifying experience for the GS-7 level includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-6 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, such as, experience participating in research related to pollinator biology in a laboratory environment; maintaining or operating scientific equipment; and recording data and results. OR Education: Successful completion of one full year of graduate level education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include: Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Toxicology, Ecology, or Physiology. OR An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above. For the GS-8: Qualifying experience for GS-8 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-7 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, such as, experience participating in research related to pollinator biology in a laboratory environment including conducting and maintaining laboratory bioassays and collecting samples from ongoing bioassays; analyzing collected samples by following detailed protocols, maintaining and operating scientific laboratory equipment; and recording and analyzing data and results related to pollinator biology research. OR Education: Successful completion of two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include: Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Entomology, Biotechnology, Toxicology, Ecology, or Physiology OR An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above. For the GS-9: Qualifying experience for GS-9 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-8 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, such as, experience participating in research related to pollinator biology in a laboratory environment including initiating and maintaining laboratory bioassays, collecting and preparing samples from ongoing bioassays; analyzing collected samples by following detailed protocols; maintaining, operating and troubleshooting scientific laboratory equipment; and recording and analyzing data and results related to pollinator biology research. OR Education: Successful completion of two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include: Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Entomology, Biotechnology, Toxicology, Ecology, or Physiology. OR An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
