Position Description The CDC Foundation seeks a candidate for a full time entomologist or biologist to assist in the culture of medically important ticks that can transmit a wide variety of bacterial and viral pathogens as well as protozoan parasites pathogenic to humans, perform morphological authentication of these stocks, perform bioassays, and assist in preparing and distributing laboratory raised ticks to collaborators. Candidates with laboratory experience in the handling and rearing of ticks or insects are preferred. This laboratory technician position works 40 hours per week, some of which may consist of occasional weekend and holiday work. The Entomologist or Biologist will be hired by the CDC Foundation and assigned to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Clifton campus in Atlanta, Georgia. The position will be located in the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), Division of Vector-Borne Diseases, Rickettsial Zoonoses Branch, Medical Entomology Laboratory. We are seeking a candidate who is responsible, meticulous, can communicate clearly, and can manage time and effort efficiently to ensure uninterrupted supply and high quality of produced materials. The candidate will be required to establish and maintain live laboratory colonies of ixodid ticks - vectors of tick-borne human diseases. Incumbent is expected to submit a base-line serum sample prior to initiating work in the Medical Entomology Laboratory and to have TB skin testing prior to work in the Animal Facility. The successful candidate will be an employee of the CDC Foundation. This full-time exempt position is privately funded by donors through the CDCF and is housed at the Rickettsial Zoonoses Branch within the Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the CDC. The position is one year term-limited with the possibility to extend past the initial term. Responsibilities • Maintain multiple colonies of ixodid ticks that may carry known or yet unknown tick-borne pathogens • Learn and utilize morphological identification of tick species and dissection techniques • Handle and work with laboratory animals (rodents, rabbits, goats) as needed for maintenance of tick colonies • Learn and utilize techniques for sedation of various laboratory animals and collection of blood, serum, and tissue samples • Maintain detailed tick colony records (paper and electronic), animal clinical records, and related documents • Prepare tick shipments to customers, maintain records of tick orders and shipments • Prepare reports as scheduled or requested by the Supervisor • Conduct general laboratory maintenance • Learn molecular techniques, such as, DNA extraction, and PCR in support of the laboratory objectives • Follow established biosafety protocols and procedures To apply Qualified candidates should email a cover letter, resume and salary requirements (in Microsoft Word or PDF format) to: FEapply@cdcfoundation.org. - Qualifications • B.S. degree in entomology, biology, public health or related science field (or minimum two years equivalent experience) • Laboratory experience in the handling and rearing of arthropods preferred • Proven ability to compile and analyze lab data • Strong written and verbal communication skills and organizational skills • Proficient use of different computer programs (Microsoft office and lab analysis software) • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated success as a team player • Ability to interact with individuals from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds • Highly capable of tracking, summarizing and reporting lab activities • Experience in performing laboratory maintenance activities
