- One Biological Scientist position is available at the University of Florida Indian River Research and Education Center, Fort Pierce, Florida. The candidate will work full-time under the supervision of the Principal Investigator to assist in the execution of basic and applied research projects relating to the biological control of invasive arthropods in Florida. The successful candidate will organize and conduct field surveys of pests and beneficial insects, maintain plants in laboratory and greenhouse settings and rear target pests and biological control agents. Problems encountered in laboratory colonization of target insects and biological control agents should be identified to develop improved rearing procedures. The candidate will use and maintain an array of equipment needed for experiments and demonstrations. Duties also include retrieval and assembly of data necessary for preparation of scientific and other internet-based publications. The candidate will perform other related tasks as required, including assisting other members of the research group with their experiments. This position is located at the Hayslip Biological Control Research and Containment Laboratory. Continuous employment is contingent on performance and availability of funds. Expected starting salary is $33,000 - $35,000 per year, depending on qualification and level of experience. The Morawo Lab is committed to fostering a diverse work environment. - Qualifications
- Minimum Requirements: 1) Bachelor’s degree in entomology, biology, agricultural sciences or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience; or a Master’s degree in entomology, biology, agricultural sciences or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience. 2) Good writing, communication and organizational skills. 3) Ability to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license. Preferred Qualifications: 1) Master’s degree in entomology with research experience in biological control of insect pests. 2) Some level of experience in ONE or more of the following areas: insect systematics, chemical ecology, molecular biology, evolution, population dynamics, modeling and GIS.
