Description
Under the direction of the Alternative Mosquito Control and Applied Research Branch Manager, the Mosquito and Vector Control (MVC) Technician II conducts field surveys, collects mosquito specimens, assists in control operations, provides public education, and performs other tasks that augment existing laboratory and field operations. Field Duties: Surveys larval development sites, adult mosquito populations and potential study areas Records field data upon appropriate forms. Identifies larval and adult mosquitoes to species. Deploys and retrieves mosquito traps, classifies and counts mosquitoes collected. Photographs mosquito larval development sites for use in adult emergence forecasting and study site-selection. Records GPS coordinates, and other site specific data. Analyzes meteorological data to make forecasts of a larval hatch and adult emergence. Performs appropriate control measures of mosquito populations or other pests as required. Uses pesticides in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines, and accurately records their usage. Assists in designing and evaluating new control products and surveillance tools both in the field and laboratory. Maintains mosquito and other organism cultures in the laboratory. Works across sections when necessary within the division outside of the typically assigned duties to further the mission of Mosquito and Vector Control Division. Maintenance / Service Duties: Performs minor field maintenance on spray/test equipment. Performs daily inspection of vehicles and equipment used in the performance of duties to include: oil, tires, fuel and other items on maintenance checklist. Assists in off-season repair and maintenance of equipment and vehicle. Helps mechanic with minor repairs. Maintains and cleans laboratory insectary and equipment. Services vehicles with fuel, oil, and insecticide as necessary. Monitors application rate and checks equipment calibration. Administrative & Laboratory Duties: Enters and retrieves data related to surveys and field tests; creates maps based on field and weather data. Supports supervisor in developing forms and databases for data collection. Completes daily logs on vehicle use, insecticide use, attendance, inspection forms, and other information as required. Assists supervisor in creating weekly and annual reports. Assists supervisor in liaison work with Federal, State, Local, and private agencies. Other: Performs other duties as assigned, including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event.
Qualifications
Requirements High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent; and Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with an organized mosquito abatement program. Experience in utilizing GPS or other electronic field equipment. Knowledge of general biology, ecology, and morphology of mosquitoes and integrated pest management. Intermediate level of proficiency skills in using Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to calculate measurements on a variety of scales. Ability to read and comprehend maps. Valid driver's license (Texas upon hire) along with a good driving record required for response distribution. Additional Requirements: Must acquire a Texas Certified Pesticide Applicator's License within one (1) year of employment. NOTE: To qualify for this position, required experience, education, knowledge and skills must be clearly stated on your application's employment history. Preferences Bachelor's of Science degree in Entomology, Biological Sciences, or Environmental Sciences. Experience working with mosquitoes, mosquito control and mosquito-associated biota in the field and laboratory conditions, including use of molecular biology. Experience in designing experiments, analyzing data and writing neat, concise, and accurate reports.
