- Description
- The Department of Entomology at Cornell University is seeking to fill a postdoctoral research associate position focused on pesticide resistance monitoring of mosquito and tick populations in the northeastern United States. The selected candidate will focus on determining the status and extent of resistance in the region through the NEVBD pesticide resistance monitoring program (neregionalvectorcenter.com/resistance). In addition, the successful candidate may be involved in the evaluation of new insecticides and efficacy trials for the control of regional disease vectors. The position is part of the CDC-funded Northeast Regional Center for Excellence in Vector-Borne Diseases (NEVBD), carrying many opportunities to interact with our leadership team and collaborators across the region. They will also work as part of a DOD-funded team focused on testing and developing methods for the control of the recently invasive Asian Longhorned Tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis). Position Responsibilities: The successful candidate is expected to play a leading role in this effort by expanding and guiding the NEVBD Pesticide Resistance Monitoring Network. Ability work independently – but also as a member of a large regional team – is essential. This position will also require experience in mosquito field collection, insecticide resistance bioassays, experimental design, GIS and statistical analyses. The successful candidate will be expected to train and work with vector control staff throughout the region, delivering training modules specifically for the collection, testing, and reporting of insecticide resistance data. The candidate will also be expected to communicate and learn the needs of the stakeholder community to guide this program. They will also be responsible for testing novel insecticides for their potential use in mosquito and tick control and will have the opportunity to contribute to courses for the NEVBD MS program in vector-borne disease (neregionalvectorcenter.com/ms-in-entomology). In addition to carrying out research central to the CDC-funded project, and obtaining publishable results and publications, the successful candidate will supervise a technician and find opportunities to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research and will themselves be mentored by Dr. Harrington in skills that will be relevant to their future career (such as grant-writing, laboratory management, planning experiments, data analysis). Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Cornell University provides an excellent benefits package. We are seeking a candidate to fill the position immediately, with a preferred start date in September -October 2020. This is a full-time position with a one-year contract from the start date, with renewal contingent upon performance and availability of funds.
