Description
The department of Microbiology, Immunology & Genetics is currently home to 25 faculty members. Specific research interests of our faculty include neuroinflammation; HIV-1 biology; fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging; cardiac muscle function; regulation of eukaryotic gene expression; T cell and NK cell biology; host response to infections; molecular immunology; tumor immunology; cytokine biology; vision research; and molecular diagnostics for emerging vector borne pathogens. The Tick-Borne Disease Research Laboratory at UNTHSC is currently seeking a Lab Technician to perform diagnostic testing on incoming samples for the presence of bacterial pathogens using molecular techniques. Job Duties: In addition to standard laboratory procedures (e.g. making reagent solutions, maintaining lab records, cleaning glassware, ordering supplies, etc.), The selected candidate will regularly perform DNA extraction on tick samples, PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA sequencing, data analysis, and report generation. The individual must be able to complete BSL2+ safety training certification and blood-borne pathogen training, and be willing to subject to a criminal background check and drug screen. Please note, in response to Covid-19, all members of the HSC community are required to wear masks in shared areas, and specific precautionary measures are currently in place to maximize social distancing.
Qualifications
Minimum: Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preferred: BS degree with molecular biology experience is required. MS degree preferred. Candidates with experience in vector-borne disease research, medical diagnostics, Sanger and next generation sequencing, cloning, and/or tissue culture are particularly encouraged to apply.
