Description
The Western Gulf Center of Excellence and the City of Harlingen are seeking application for a student summer intern to work at the City of Harlingen Environmental Health Department with Dr. Jose Estrada, Medical Entomologist on Arbovirus Surveillance through blood meal analyses at different Sella stages.  They will conduct surveillance and control efforts using different trapping strategies of the main mosquito vectors (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus) in urban settings of the City of Harlingen.  In close collaboration with the Texas Health Department, the individual will establish base-line studies and resistance profiles of different mosquito populations of the Harlingen area.  Initial colonization efforts of Aedes aegypti populations from Harlingen will be carried out for potential sterile insect releases using irradiated males.  The student will also participate in basic ecology studies in close collaboration with the USDA-Medical, Urban and Agriculture laboratory in Gainesville Florida on survival, flight range, sexual potential and gamma irradiated ideal dosage for mosquito releases will be set.This internship will provide students the opportunity to experience working in a city environmental health, in field, research, data gathering, and some laboratory experience.  Among other daily activities will include assisting with mosquito check-in, data entry, mosquito identification, mosquito colony maintenance, and insecticide resistance testing.
