- Description
- The intern position at DRAC/MAP works under the supervision of the Project Lead and/or Rearing Specialist and assists with and/or completes daily operational tasks as they pertain to studies and experiments at the mosquito bio-control research facility. Tasks include insect laboratory and insectary maintenance, participation in on- and offsite baiting and trapping invertebrates, and maintenance of equipment. The intern will learn insectary functions, basic entomology and mosquito biology. An end-of-term presentation is expected to complete the internship. OVERVIEW OF DUTIES, TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES The tasks outlined below are intended as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Other duties may be assigned as deemed appropriate. The intern is expected to learn and complete tasks with or without supervision. • Daily upkeep, maintenance and detailed record keeping of stock cultures • Feeding and care of captive larval, adult predators and their prey cultures • Take part in preparing/setting/collecting mosquito traps outdoors in forest, wetland and residential areas • Identification of live and preserved invertebrate samples • Assists with data entry, design, evaluation and implementation of lab software or app-ware • General cleanup of supplies, equipment, and laboratory
- Qualifications
- CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS, must be: • at least 18 years or older • enrolled in college/university with preferred course work to include biological sciences, conservation, entomology, bioengineering or public health; or similar • able to work flexible days with a maximum 40hrs/week (minimum 35hrs/week) • willing to work with and come into physical contact with live and preserved invertebrates (i.e. mosquitoes, their life food cultures, etc.) • willing and able to work both indoors and outdoors • pass a criminal background check, drug and alcohol screening • must have reliable transportation to and from work. Possession of valid Texas driver’s license, with an acceptable driving record is preferred • able to communicate verbally and in writing, follow directions and comprehend documents in English
