Description
The Technician I, under general supervision, assists in planning research on support laboratory methods and techniques, carrying out procedures, and recording results for a series of closely-controlled experiments. The Technician I will join a research team focusing on biosurveillance of mosquito-borne viruses, including Zika, Chikungunya, and Dengue viruses in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Projects will involve working with local jurisdictions and community engagement to address research questions related to the risk of human exposure to mosquito-borne viruses along with enhanced biosurveillance in the region. Responsibilities: -Assist with field collections of mosquitoes, assessment of interventions for mosquito control, human questionnaires, database management and sample processing in the lab. -Conducts experiments and technical procedures. Carries out research problems. -Researches literature relating to possible procedures and experiments. Modifies procedures to suit the particular research need. -Assists with planning and supervising technical operations. -Assists personnel involved in a series of controlled environment or analysis experiments. -Makes complex chemical and physical analyses which, although they follow standard procedures and tests, may require the exercise of some ingenuity and improvisation. -Uses computer equipment for controlling equipment and compiling data. -Makes and records observations and measurements. -Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: -Bachelor's degree in biology, biomedical sciences, public health, entomology, or related fields but those with a Master's degree or Ph.D. in the same areas are also encouraged to apply. -Field experience and knowledge of insects is preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: -Knowledge of laboratory equipment, scientific apparatus and computer equipment. -Fluent in English and Spanish -Ability to establish effective working relationships. -Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. -Ability to work independently and as an effective member of multidisciplinary collaborative teams and have excellent interpersonal skills with a diversity of people including the general public.
