- Position Location: United States Dept. of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service Center for Medical, Agricultural, and Veterinary Entomology Imported Fire Ant and Household Insect Research Unit 1600 SW 23rd Drive, Gainesville, FL 32608 Laboratory/field technician is needed for research on the biology and control of invasive ants (for example fire ants, tawny crazy ants). Duties include assisting/conducting/coordinating laboratory and field research on invasive ants and maintaining/coordinating the rearing of laboratory colonies of ants. Applicants should be comfortable with working with stinging insects and able to work (includes recurring walking and bending) outdoors for extended periods of time.

- Qualifications: Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. At the GS-07 pay grade level Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in an experiment or research project related to insects; collecting or evaluating samples related to insects; recording or summarizing of scientific data; and operating or maintaining scientific equipment. OR Education: Successful completion of one full year of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Entomology, Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology, Wildlife Conservation, or Horticulture. OR A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above. For example 6 months of specialized experience combined with 9 credit hours of relevant graduate level coursework. At the GS-08 pay grade level Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience conducting an experiment or research project related to insects; collecting or evaluating samples related to insects; recording, summarizing, or analyzing of scientific data; and operating and maintaining scientific equipment. OR Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Entomology, Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology, Wildlife Conservation, or Horticulture. OR An appropriate combination of specialized experience and graduate level education directly related to the work of the position as stated above. For example 6 months of specialized experience combined with 18 credit hours of relevant graduate level coursework.
