- The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants for a Laboratory Technologist I position located in the Department of Biomedical & Diagnostic Sciences. This position maintains the quality and efficiency of the Diagnostic Parasitology Service in conjunction with the Molecular Parasitology Research laboratory and would be split equally between the two labs. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, conducting routine classical and molecular parasitology testing, assisting with specimen accessioning, performing general laboratory tasks, adhering to established safety procedures, maintaining client confidentiality, and providing excellent customer service. This is a temporary position with the possibility of becoming permanent. Typical Responsibilities Parasitology techniques: Performs fecal floats, Knott’s test, parasite identification, and various serology tests on clinical and research specimens Performs DNA extraction, PCR, and submission of PCR products for sequencing on clinical and research samples Adheres to established quality assurance procedures Reviews and transcribes results Operates standard laboratory equipment and specialized equipment used in parasite detection Participates in general laboratory safety training Adheres to all university and lab established safety procedures Assist with live animal experiments and necropsies for research investigations Other duties include: Specimen collection and processing Adhere to established testing turnaround times Provide excellent customer service while maintaining client confidentiality Maintaining cleanliness and organization of the lab spaces
- Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications: This is an entry level position. Bachelor’s Degree in biology, microbiology, wildlife health, medical technology or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience is required. Preferred Qualifications: One year of working in a clinical or diagnostic laboratory setting. Knowledge of VistA (hospital computer system). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed: Fundamental knowledge of laboratory safety and techniques, including working with biohazardous materials. Knowledge of how to properly use and maintain laboratory equipment. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally and excellent customer service skills. Ability to work independently, as well as, part of a team. Skilled in various computer programs, such as Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365. Reliable and organized with the ability to follow instructions and protocols precisely.
