- Position Function: Mississippi State University is currently seeking qualified individuals for a research (75%) and Extension (25%) faculty position (non-tenure track) to conduct research and Extension in an area of pollinator health and/or pollinator ecology as it relates to agricultural crop production. The incumbent will be administratively responsible to the Delta Research and Extension Center, and will be a formal member of the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Entomology and Plant Pathology at the main campus in Starkville, MS. The candidate will also work closely with scientists from ARS/USDA, other universities and on-campus scientists. For salary grade UC, these positions are "Unclassified" and salary ranges are determined by the hiring department. Department Profile: The Delta Research and Extension Center (DREC) serves as Mississippi State University's Research and Extension arm for the Delta region of Mississippi. The Delta is an alluvial floodplain that encompasses an 18 county area in northwest Mississippi. The Delta is an area of intense agricultural production. Area of Specialization: Entomology/ Apiculture Specialist Anticipated Appointment Date: July 1, 2020 Tenure Track Status: Regular Non-tenure track 12-month position Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent will be expected to conduct innovative and comprehensive research focusing on improving honey bee (Apis mellifera) health in intensive agricultural systems. The incumbent will be expected to manage honey bee colonies suitable for year-round research investigating their interactions with the local agro-ecosystem. Research may focus on, but is not limited to, biological interactions with agricultural crop production in the region and other stressors that have been implicated in declining pollinator health, including diseases and parasites, toxicity of and exposure to pesticides, sub-lethal effects of pesticides in the food chain, effects of monoculture in agriculture on the nutritional environment for pollinators, and interactions among these and other factors. To develop an effective research and Extension program, the incumbent will work with commodity groups, producers, and allied groups in pollinator health and ecology. Incumbent will also be expected to develop and maintain a cooperative relationship with other scientists across Mississippi and other areas of the southern U.S., including USDA-ARS. The successful candidate will be responsible for information transfer to stakeholders of research-based pollinator ecology and management recommendations through the use of appropriate technologies. The incumbent will submit and/or partner with colleagues in grant and contract proposals seeking funding to support applied research efforts. Furthermore, the incumbent will demonstrate and present information and updates through effective program delivery by planning and participating in local, state, regional and national meetings with clientele. The incumbent should have a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate research findings and troubleshoot problems with producers and extension personnel. The incumbent will also be expected to publish research findings in appropriate professional research journals and make presentations at professional meetings. Participation in graduate student training and contributions to collaborative teaching in off-campus and campus-based educational programs in entomology/apiculture will be encouraged. The incumbent will also be expected to actively participate in professional societies/organizations as well as appropriate DREC and MSU committees and commodity groups.
- Qualifications
- Minimum Qualifications: An earned Ph.D. in entomology or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher learning with a strong emphasis in apiculture. Individuals who are ABD (all but dissertation) will be considered. Acceptable candidate must have outstanding English verbal and written communication skills, experience with managing honey bees and agricultural production, statistics, and experimental design. Experience in grant writing and pursuit of extramural funding is required. The level of appointment and/or rank and salary will be commensurate to the individual's qualifications and experience. ABDs or degree pending considered (all but DISS): ABDs will be considered. Preferred Qualifications: Strong experience in honey bee health, ecology, and management and demonstrated excellence in research, extramural grant writing, and senior author publication. Familiarity with the production of agronomic crops such as corn, soybean, and cotton that form the pollinator ecosystem is desirable. Ph.D. and Post-Doctoral experience is preferred.
