- Under general supervision by the regional Supervising Public Health Biologist, the Associate Public Health Biologist will independently conduct vector-borne disease prevention, surveillance, and control activities in the designated region and elsewhere in California as required. Duties include 1) acting as a technical consultant and providing guidance, training, and educational materials on vector-borne disease prevention, surveillance, and control to local, state, and federal agencies, the medical community, and the general public, 2) planning and carrying-out research projects related to the prevention, epidemiology, surveillance, and control of vector-borne diseases, and 3) communicating plans and findings regularly with Supervisor and co-workers. Up to 10% field work and travel may be required. **Will also consider Temporary Authorization Utilization (TAU) appointments- Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications for the classification but do not currently have eligibility on an employment certification list by having taken and passed an examination may apply as a TAU. TAU appointments are limited to a duration of 9 months within a 12 consecutive month period. In order for a TAU appointment to become permanent, individuals must take and pass the related examination, and thereby become eligible from a certification list, within 9 months of TAU appointment. Individuals who successfully obtain eligibility prior to the expiration of the TAU appointment will not be required to re-compete in a competitive process for permanent appointment to that position**
- Qualifications
- Associate Public Health Biologist Either I: One year of experience in the California state service performing the duties of an Assistant Public Health Biologist, Range B. Or II: Experience: Three years of experience in public health biology, one of which must have been in vector biology and control in a health agency or other related private industry. (Possession of a graduate degree in a biological science or closely related specialty may be substituted for the experience on the basis of two years of experience for a master's degree or three years of experience for a doctorate degree.) and Education: Graduation from college with a baccalaureate degree in a biological or closely related science. Knowledge of: All of the above, and public health principles, practices, laws and regulations; use of chemical and biological control agents; current public health issues including biological and ecological research studies; and total scope of vector control program activities. Ability to: All of the above, and independently conduct scientific studies required to evaluate animal-related disease and control problems; analyze situations accurately and select effective courses of action; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with individuals and organizations; interpret current research literature and apply results to prevention and control programs; effectively evaluate animal-related disease prevention and control programs at the local level and make recommendations for improvements and/or compliance with current laws and regulations; and coordinate vector management through cooperative agencies (other State and local governments).
