Description
Scout for pests as part of an IPM program in hops and blueberry. Check spray effectiveness following REI and spray application. Collect diagnostic information and suggest etiology while providing evidence for the conclusion. Take rapid and accurate counts of insects and sporulation on leaves. Take accurate counts, and correctly identify, insects on sticky traps. Service and collect data on stationary traps in the field. Rogue for male and off-type hop plants. Gather accurate GPS data and keep clear and reliable written logs. Utilize field-based data entry systems to gather data remotely. Backup and maintain appropriate redundant data for personal accountability. Collect and process leaf samples for plant sap analysis. Gather, organize, analyze, interpret, and disseminate operational data accurately and in a timely manner. Clearly articulate findings to relevant stakeholders through written, verbal, or electronic means. Experience Description: Interns will typically work from 5 or 6 am until 4 to 5 in the afternoon Monday through Friday. Saturday will typically be reserved for odd jobs, “field trip” type industry tours, or R&D work. Afternoons will be reserved for R&D work depending on weather and other work needs. Sunday work could be required depending on workloads, but is not likely.
Qualifications
Who We Look For: Generally, undergrads in agriculture-related fields, preference is towards entomology or agronomy majors with prior field experience in industry. A desire to work in agronomy, IPM, or farm operations in the future is preferable. Preference will be given to applicants that also include work samples such as excel datasets, GIS projects or related land resource management projects or data collection and management projects.
