- Description
- Under general supervision of the Medical Virology Group Manager and under technical guidance of the Arbovirus-Entomology Team Leader identifies arthropods, including mosquitoes for arbovirus testing and for reference collections. Trains others on entomological procedures as needed; participates in customer service problem solving, answers routine customer inquiries according to standard operating procedures and some non-routine customer inquiries. Maintains laboratory mosquito colonies and participates in insecticide resistance testing. Participates in data entry, management of databases, and preparing reports. Participates in the extraction of nucleic acids and real time RT-PCR of mosquito pools and equine specimens for arbovirus testing. Reviews and interprets PCR results and coordinates any additional work needed on the specimens and insures that the specimens are processed appropriately. Assist Arbovirus-Entomology Team Leader in maintaining proper work flow and stock levels of materials and supplies. Duties are performed with moderate latitude to develop and interpret protocol, and with considerable use of scientific knowledge and independent judgment.
- Qualifications
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge and skill in the principles of public health microbiology, including laboratory safety, aseptic technique, handling of pathogenic organisms and live arthropod specimens, and procedural and taxonomic studies of arthropods. Substantial skill and proficiency in light and dissecting, microscopy, in use of taxonomic keys, and in mosquito colony maintenance. Ability to work well with others in the health profession, including field investigators and clinicians. Ability to use a computer for word processing, spreadsheet and database analysis, and results reporting. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; follow written and verbal instructions; teach entomological procedures and use of various items of laboratory equipment. Ability to effectively communicate technical instructions and interact with staff; work independently and make technical decisions based on professional knowledge and experience. Skill in manipulating standard laboratory equipment with speed, accuracy, and safety. Will require documentation of Influenza, hepatitis B, and Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Yellow fever, and Rabies vaccinations. Tb skin test is also required. Education Requirement: Have an earned bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution; or Have an earned associate’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution. Experience and education may be substituted as defined by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA ’88) Standards. This is a long-term, full-time, temporary assignment at a state agency. Hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Pay is $26.00 per hour, 40 hours per week.
