Description
This is a 12 month, full time (40/hours/week) position with Kansas State University, Department of Entomology. The position will be located near or in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. Incumbent will maintain laboratory colonies of living insects inside a quarantine-regulated facility needed for research on exotic pests of plants in the USA. Maintain all equipment and supplies needed to conduct the assigned research; Conduct laboratory and field research on trapping, survey and detection of Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle-CRB (Oryctes rhinoceros, Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) and Asian Longhorn Beetle- ALB (Anoplophora glabripennis, Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) that will inform regulatory policy and support detection efforts within the USA. Experiments will involve testing pheromones and other attractants for their utility in detection and monitoring of these pests. Field work will involve trapping experiments; and laboratory work will involve screening analysis of semiochemicals for insects in olfactory bioassays; Meet with l ead scientists to discuss methods and approaches for an assigned experiment. Record, analyze and summarize experimental data when needed. Write reports of research results and then present and discuss results and future experiments with the lead scientists. Qualifications
Minimum Requirements: • Bachelor of Science. • Experience with conducting laboratory and/or field research with insect pests. Preferred Qualifications: • BS in Biology or any Biological Discipline. • Experience conducting experiments and working with living and dead insects, and other organisms as needed for the research. • Ability to rear, count and sort living insects and related organisms as needed for the research. • Ability to record and analyze results of experiments with insects, and to analyze and summarize numerical data from experiments. • Experience using software for word processing, spreadsheet creation, data processing and graphics as needed. • The candidate should understand or have experience using gas chromatography or similar analytical methods. • Be able to draft narrative documents describing the methods and results of experiments as directed by the supervisor. Other Requirements: • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment • Must have driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle.
