Description
The Research Associate performs skilled, administrative, and managerial support in research. Plans and directs certain phases in a research project. Employment may be contingent upon additional funding in the future. Responsibilities: Laboratory Testing - Performs routine laboratory tests including DNA and RNA extraction, cell and parasite culture, routine PCR and real time PCR and synthesizes and interprets results. Assists with diagnostic parasitology service including a series of classical, microscopy-based diagnostic tests. Procedures - Designs and troubleshoots protocols, procedures and techniques including molecular and immunodiagnostics tests. Provide training and supervision to graduate students, professional and undergraduate students, and part-time workers in standardized research techniques and analytical procedures; Travel to sample collection sites might be required. Project Development - Assists a project leader with the development and implementation of research projects. Participates in sample collection and animal experiments; development and scheduling of experiments; conducts experiments; and maintains detailed records of data and prepares written summaries of results for inclusion in reports and manuscripts; utilizes computers to generate graphics and statistical displays and bioinformatics/phylogenetic analysis; sets up and organize lab meetings; presents at lab meetings. Equipment and Supplies - Operates and maintains lab equipment, including microscopes, centrifuges, thermocyclers, and incubators; performs and schedules maintenance on research equipment; may coordinate the use of research equipment and other resources. Ensure availability of proper laboratory supplies and procures supplies as necessary; maintain and update records of expenditures on project accounts. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Required Education and Experience: Appropriate bachelor’s degree Two years' of relevant professional experience Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others Exceptional communication skills, ability to work independently, multi-task, organized and detail-oriented, demonstrated creativity and high motivation Other Requirements or Other Factors Requires occasional lifting of materials, protracted standing or sitting in one position, occasional kneeling Handling and collecting biological samples of animals (ferrets, dogs, cats, rodents) and animal biological samples: parasite specimens, feces, blood, serum Preferred Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, Biochemistry or other life sciences related field or Masters’ degree in a related field Familiarity with appropriate laboratory and technical equipment Some experience in a parasitology lab related experience preferred and have attended a Parasitology course would be a plus Experience with the following lab techniques: classical diagnostic parasitology techniques, ELISA, cell and parasite culture, microscopy, DNA and RNA extraction, routine PCR, real-time PCR, PCR product purification, and agarose gel electrophoresis Experience with working with animals (dogs, ferrets, others) Experience with Bioinformatics skills
