Pay Grade: J The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is the lead agency entrusted by the people of the state of Georgia with the ultimate responsibility for the health of communities and the entire population. The agency is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the position of Vector Surveillance Coordinator within the Division of Health Protection, Environmental Health Section. This positions territory is the Macon/Dublin Public Health Districts. This position has primary responsibility to conduct and coordinate mosquito surveillance and response activities for vector borne diseases such as West Nile Virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Lacrosse Encephalitis, Zika and other vectorborne diseases in a multi-county region. Duties will include establishing surveillance locations throughout the PH District, setting up traps and collecting mosquitos, mosquito identification, pesticide resistance studies, community assessments, and education programs. When necessary, this position will coordinate mosquito control activities with existing city/county/contracted mosquito control agencies and assist with localized control efforts. In addition, this position supports the EH Team by assisting with surveillance for other public health issues of concern, including agents of bioterrorism (BT), tickborne diseases, rabies, bedbugs, and participates in outbreak detection and emergency response activities. This position is grant funded for two years. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: • Develops and implements vector surveillance systems and reports all data to the State medical entomologists. • Works with public health partners including local Environmental Health offices, epidemiology, mosquito control agencies, homeowners associations, laboratories, clinicians, and healthcare facilities to improve surveillance. • Ensures that appropriate district and local public health officials are informed of suspect cases or outbreaks of arborviral diseases identified within their jurisdiction. Offers consultation and assistance for proper follow-up. • Participates in investigations of outbreaks of arborviral and other vectorborne diseases under the guidance of the Public Health Entomologist. • Performs various EH duties in support of Section operations that may include EH inspections and complaint response. • Will also assist in the preparation of reports of findings; work closely with district and county health jurisdictions; and maintain knowledge of Environmental Health and epidemiologic methods. Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university which included the completion of 27 semester hours (or 40 quarter hours) in laboratory sciences (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics, etc.) AND One year of experience at the lower level PH Envir Compl Specialist 2 (RCP121) or position equivalent. Preferred Qualifications • Experience in vector control and surveillance methods • Field biology experience
