- Under the supervision of the Vector Surveillance Branch Manager, the Vector Control Operator works to collect field samples for identification of various vectors in the county in addition to performing appropriate control measures for mosquito populations under the supervision of the Ultraviolet Low Volume (ULV) Night Supervisor and Assistant ULV Night Supervisors. Vector Surveillance Duties: Sorts, identifies and prepares vector collections for further identification and testing. Prepares all trapping and surveillance materials for daily surveillance of kissing bug and tick vectors. Tick trapping and surveillance materials include tick drags, flags, and carbon dioxide-baited traps. Kissing bug trapping and surveillance materials include multi-baited traps, UV light trapping at night, and field collection methods with debris-cutting and moving tools. Coordinates the daily usage of the amount of dry ice and other lures for the multiple types of surveillance methods. Conducts surveillance for kissing bug-borne disease, tick-borne diseases, and mosquito-borne diseases including surveying sites, set up and collection of traps, and physical field collection methods. Identifies ticks and kissing bugs to species in the field during surveys and inspections. Contributes in the creation and testing of new kissing bug and tick traps, in addition to testing these new traps and methods. Supports in field collections of ticks and kissing bugs for future testing. Assists in supervision of seasonal employees during the absence of supervisor or manager. ULV Applications: Performs appropriate control measures for mosquito populations in assigned areas as required. Accurately enters data in ULV monitoring systems. Monitors environmental and mechanical conditions during insecticidal applications to ensure accurate delivery of material. Uses pesticides in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines. Records all insecticide usage. Other: Works on promoting health equity to attain the highest level of health in our communities by monitoring those areas where health determinants are low or lacking. Performs other duties as assigned, including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event.
- Qualifications
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent; and Four (4) years of stable employment history. OR Bachelor's degree. PLUS Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications with a strong emphasis on Excel. Ability to operate the keyboard interface of the ULV Monitor 4 spray system used in the spray truck fleet. A valid driver's license (Texas upon hire) along with a good driving record. Additional Requirements Must obtain a Pesticide Application License from the Texas Department of Agriculture within one (1) year of hire. Must be willing to work evening and night schedules when required. Must be willing to work early mornings and occasionally after hours and/or weekends. Physical and Environmental Requirements Ability to lift at least 70 lbs. Ability to walk at least two (2) miles in one day. Willing to work outdoors for long hours.
